Things to see in Frankfurt

Frankfurt, the financial capital of continental Europe, lies on the banks of the river Main. It is the fifth largest city in Germany, the hub of the country`s transportation network and home to world famous trade fairs, but there is a lot more to see and do in the city than perhaps first meets the eye.

Like so many European cities Frankfurt is made up of contrasts between the old parts of the city and the modern. The towering modern buildings of the financial district make an impressive sight; a stunning skyscraper skyline especially when the lights are reflected in the river at night. Tourists can walk around these busy streets gazing up at some of the tallest buildings in Europe before heading to the Main Tower which is open to the public and has a restaurant and viewing platform for the furthest reaching views of the city.

Romerberg is the old heart of the town, housing the Romer, city hall and St Bartholomew`s Cathedral. In the Romerberg Square next to the cathedral the buildings are timber framed, gabled and beautifully colourful and they bear marvellous names like Golden Griffin, Great Angel and Black Star. Amazingly these were destroyed during the war in one night of terrible bombing, but have been rebuilt exactly as the original buildings. The square is cobbled and in the centre is the statue and Fountain of Justice. The cathedral itself dominates the area with its 95 metre tall tower and imposing Gothic architecture.

There are many museums in Frankfurt housing exhibitions of subjects as diverse as the history of the city, natural history, German film, transport and comic book art. There are also several art galleries. Perhaps the most widely appreciated museums in the city is the Senckenberg Natural History Museum, a brilliant modern museum dedicated to fossils, dinosaurs and animals life. One unusual way to enjoy these museums is to visit at the end of April each year, when for one night many of them stay open until the early hours of the morning as part of an event called the Long Night of Museums.

Those who prefer their animals living could visit Frankfurt Zoo, the largest zoo in Germany, housing thousands of animals in as natural settings as possible. Frankfurt also has a number of gardens and parks including the tropical and botanical gardens, Palmengarten, which has wonderful displays of plants both indoors and out.

Frankfurt`s most famous inhabitant was the author Goethe, born here in 1749. Goethe house was largely destroyed during the war but has been fully restored and is now open as a museum celebrating the life and work of the writer. Anyone looking for some music or theatrical entertainment can go to the Alte Oper, the old opera house and enjoy one of the many concerts or plays put on there.

Frankfurt has lots to offer for those who wish to travel deals on flights and hotels make a weekend break to this busy city at the heart of Germany possible.
